A Drink in a Refreshed Soprano
Written on 23 Oct 2013
We chanced a swift visit to the newly refreshed/redesigned/refitted Soprano (Tunbridge Wells) the other night (http://www.sopranowinebar.co.uk/home.htm).
Just being in the market for a whistle-whetter, we didn't stop long (and fearing we'd be absorbed-by-osmosis into the enormous hen do [enormous by number of attendees, not size of hen - I didn't spot her]).
The bar man was a little unpracticed at politely suggesting we could only have the bar seats for half an hour (more than enough for us, incidentally), but it was busy and he was much in demand, so it's understandable
The refit is a definite win for Soprano; you can, and are meant to, eat at the bar if you so wish, but they also look to have kept the number of covers equal, so you should be just as able to have a proper sit down do on the tapas menu if you're making an evening of it.
The addition of the full-size bar makes it a lot easier to imitate the Spanish culture of stopping by for a small dish and a drink. Typically UK and other European restaurants don't do too well at this, as you feel sheepish for taking a whole table up if you want a mezze board, so it's nice to find somewhere in town you can stop by for a drink and a nibble without being eyed by management.
We'll be back.
